In 1997 I was on tour with my band Rage Against the Machine, opening for U2. I woke up one morning halfway through the tour with my eyesight diminished by about 30%. I also started to feel extremely lethargic and knew something wasn't right. I finished the rest of the tour, then came home and went to the doctor. I was diagnosed with Late Onset Type 1 Diabetes.
I drank functional beverages and fruit juices to replenish my system while drumming at concerts and exercising. As a health-conscious diabetic, I realized those same beverages that had previously sustained my stamina were not such a healthy choice after all. I was amazed to find that those "healthy" beverages have as much sugar as a can of Coke.
Unable to find an all-natural, sugar-free, functional beverage in my local health food stores, I began formulating my own. My wife Selene introduced me to Stevia and Olade was born.
